JOINT MESSAGE FROM
THE PASTORS
DORCHESTER AND MATTAPAN
A recent report in the Dorchester Reporter has unfortunately and mistakenly characterized the efforts, which are just beginning, regarding the 2010 Schools Initiative in our community.
Allow us to assure you, first and foremost, that no decisions have been made with regards to Catholic schools in Dorchester and Mattapan. No school closings have been announced and none are planned at this time. The very earliest any plan could be implemented is 2008.
The Archdiocese is following the process that led to the recent announcement of a plan to strengthen Catholic elementary schools in Brockton, which began in August 2005. The reality of declining enrollments and the need for significant capital to upgrade facilities call for action in Dorchester and Mattapan. In light of these and other factors, to do nothing is not an option.
Over the past eighteen months local pastors and their principals have met and shared information with parish leadership regarding our local Catholic schools and the community's needs going forward. The next step will involve the 2010 Committee beginning discussions with principals, teachers, parents, city officials and community representatives. Each constituency will contribute to shaping the plan for Dorchester and Mattapan. The Archdiocese will consult with and hear from the local stakeholders (parishes, parents, principals, teachers, staff, city officials, clergy and religious) and undertake a thorough analysis before making any decisions.
The dedicated professionals who make up the Archdiocese's 2010 team are committed to strengthening Catholic schools in the Archdiocese and providing the best possible opportunities for children. We are fortunate that these generous and dedicated individuals from across different professions are bringing their expertise to this important initiative.
Our commitment is to strengthen and enhance Catholic education in Dorchester and Mattapan.
Thank you.
